Zero Emission Project Gallery

National Zero-Emission Bus Consultant

EquiCharge delivered a report exploring the leading/best practices and future considerations for Transit Planning, Operations, & Training (SPOT) about battery-electric bus (BEB) deployments. Eleven Canadian Transit Agencies participated in focus groups to explore the practices utilized in SPOT areas, the path that led them to where they are today, and the challenges and lessons learned along their electrification journey.

Operational Modelling - Fleet Expansion

Simulation modelling and analysis to assess BEB fleet expansion feasibility and requirements for a significant increase in the zero-emission fleet in the future. Delivered Electricity cost modelling, validated electrification scenario analysis, charging operation processes, and optimized charging dispenser/connector floor plans.

Operational Modelling - Greenfield Facility

Simulation modelling and analysis to determine facility and network requirements to support fleet expansion and full electrification over the next 5-10 years. Assessed in-depot, on-route/opportunity, and mixed charging methods and their associated vehicle requirements to determine feasible emission reduction scenarios.

Electric School Bus Feasibility

Feasibility, Planning, and concept design for Electric School bus fleet facilities in Ontario & Alberta. Delivered operational cost modelling, preliminary site designs, and insights into federal and provincial grant programs for zero-emission fleet deployments of between 5-40 buses.

Transit Garage Feasibility Study & Design

Programming, schematic design and design development for up to 200 BEBs, supported by a new electrical distribution and 12.5MVA on-site substation upgrade, three (3) 3.1MVA backup roof-top generators (with u/g fuel storage), eighty (80) pantograph, in-depot overhead 150kW chargers, ten (10) electric-capable maintenance bays with tooling/cranes, expanded parts storage and civil considerations (e.g., fire suppression, lithium-ion battery storage, etc.).

Transit Garage  Feasibility Study

Facility assessment study (architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical) for up to 100 SBEs (standard bus equivalents) converted to ZEVs, supported by a new electrical distribution and 5MVA on-site transformer upgrades, two (2) 1.5MVA backup power generators (with u/g fuel storage), fifty (50) pantograph, in-depot 150kW overhead chargers, electric-capable maintenance bays with tooling/cranes, expanded parts storage and civil considerations (e.g., fire suppression, lithium-ion battery storage, etc.).

Hydrogen Refueling Station Assessment

Feasibility assessment for on-site liquid and gaseous hydrogen fuel storage at a transit garage. Analysis of the number of Fuel Cell Electric Buses (FCEBs) that could be supported by different delivery and storage methods and the space requirements for hydrogen storage and dispensing equipment. The assessment included safety considerations for specialized hydrogen storage and maintenance areas.

Transit Garage Design & Build

Schematic design, design development and construction documents for 65 BEBs, supported by 2.5MVA transformer upgrade, 3.1MVA exterior backup generator (with u/g fuel storage), six (6) bus tracks, (26) overhead, in-depot 150kW chargers, six (6) electric-capable maintenance bays with tooling/cranes, expanded parts storage and civil considerations (e.g., fire suppression, lithium-ion battery storage, etc.)

Schematic design, design development and construction documents for 15 BEBs, five (5) overhead, in-depot 150kW pantograph chargers, 1.2kVA transformer upgrade, one (1) electric-capable maintenance bay with tooling/cranes, expanded parts storage, civil considerations (e.g., fire suppression, lithium-ion battery storage, etc.).

Forty (40) Diesel Bus Replacement

Collaborated across a large municipal government, City Council & transit agency to develop, propose & approve funding for a transition to battery-electric buses instead of continuing to purchase diesel buses.

Conducted change impact assessment across City government, developed and implemented change plans to coincide with introducing a new battery-electric bus (BEB), in-depot pantograph charging and charging operations. Provided project and change management for all aspects: transit services, bus maintenance, emergency response, facility infrastructure, procurement/legal, IT and business intelligence.

Maintenance Garages - Feasibility Study & Pre-design

Schematic design of a "light-duty" maintenance facility for two (2) BEBs maintenance bays, 1.2KVA transformer upgrade, with tooling and a 2T crane, one (1) plug-in 50 kW charger, expanded parts storage and civil considerations (e.g., fire suppression, lithium-ion battery storage, etc.).

Schematic design of a "heavy" maintenance facility for two (2) BEBs maintenance bays, 1.2KVA transformer upgrade, with tooling and a 2T crane, one (1) plug-in 50 kW charger, expanded parts storage and civil considerations (e.g., fire suppression, lithium-ion battery storage, etc.).

On-Route Charging Feasibility Study

Feasibility assessment (facility infrastructure - civil, architectural, electrical, mechanical, structural) for on-route high power pantograph chargers at up to 10 Transit Centers located throughout a large municipality that supports ultra-long (400+ km) EV-capable runs. Charging power of 450 kW including installation of 750 kVA pad mount transformer, power cabinets, L-framed support structure, poured slab foundation, and piled foundation for L-frame and civil considerations.

Gov. Building EV Charging Feasibility Study

Feasibility assessment (facility infrastructure - civil, architectural, electrical, mechanical, structural) for Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers at several government buildings, such as transit garages and new buildings.
